Life
By Mark Cantrell
Life,
It’s a walk in the park,
Only,
I got mugged
Life,
It’s a bowl of cherries,
Only,
I got left the pips
Life,
It’s a game,
And I lost...
The rule book.

About Me
- Mark Cantrell
- A coffee-guzzling journalist turned novelist and occasional poet as well as an all-round layabout, Mark has spent a good few years chasing the literary dream. These days it is harder than ever to put across a suitably bohemian image, but he does his best. To date, he has written four novels, published his first poetry collection, and has written numerous examples of short fiction. And the era is still young...

Magazine Aims For Rebirth
A group of undergraduate students are in the process of resurrecting New CollAge magazine and are looking for poetry submissions.
A Professor A McA Miller originally founded the magazine in 1964 at the New College of Florida. The journal’s ethos was to welcome submissions from anyone, anywhere. When he retired in 2005, the magazine also folded. Now, it is looking to make a reappearance in the spring of 2009, complete with a new website.
The deadline for submissions is 15 April 2009.
“We are looking for poems with craft, with magic, with music, with teeth,” the editorial team says. “Simultaneous submissions are fine, but every poem will count for us in the nascent days of the magazine, so please let us know promptly if you must withdraw a submission.”
Interested poets should paste three to five poems into the body of an email. A short biography should also be included, but – as the editors say – “don’t get carried away”. The response time for a reply will be around two to three months.
For those who prefer ‘snail mail’ submissions, the address is: New CollAge Magazine, New College of Florida, c/o WRC, 5800 Bayshore Road, Sarasota, FL 34243, USA.

Win 500 Quid
POETS are invited to submit small collections of their work to the 2009 Templar Poetry Pamphlet & Collection Competition to potentially win a cash prize of £500 and publication of their work.
The four winning collections will be published in pamphlet format and launched at the Derwent Poetry Festival in October 2009. The four winners will also receive the cash prize and have the opportunity to submit a full collection for publication.
Around 40 poets who enter, but don’t win, will see one of their poems published in the competition anthology, and all writers submitting to the competition will receive a complimentary copy of the volume, which is set to retail for £8.
“The competition is now in its fourth year and offers an excellent opportunity for writers to have their work published,” said Alex McMillen, Templar Poetry’s Managing Editor.
“Our pamphlets and collections have been widely praised for their quality. Mike Barlow’s winning 2008 pamphlet was a Poetry Book Society Winter Choice and many of our published poets have enjoyed further recognition of their work in the Forward Prize, Faber and Picador anthologies, major single poem competitions and publication by other imprints.”
The submission fee for entering the competition is £18 (or its Euro equivalent) and the closing date for submissions is 30 April 2009. The judge is Tim Liardet.
Submissions should be sent to: Templar Poetry, 2009 Pamphlet & Collection Competition, PO Box 7082, Bakewell, Derbyshire, DE45 9AF.

* Next month Templar Poetry, in conjunction with the University of Gloucester, will publish a relaunched Iota Magazine. For more information visit: www.iotamagazine.co.uk

Coming Out Of Isolation
Isolation Space
An Anthology Of Short Fiction By Mark Cantrell
Copyright © March 2009
ISOLATION Space is the first paperback anthology presenting 20 of Mark Cantrell’s short stories in one singular volume.
Most of the stories have appeared in small press magazines, while others have gained an airing on the author’s literary blog Tyke Script Redrafted, but this is the first time they will have appeared together in one bound edition.
The stories presented within the covers of Isolation Space combine to make an eclectic collection of science fiction, fantasy, horror and some more esoteric works of a more literary nature. One thing is certain – you won’t be disappointed.
The 284-page paperback, perfect-bound edition is soon to be published through Lulu and Amazon priced £9.99. So, check back here for further details over the next few weeks. Meanwhile, read the blurb and taste a preview of the tales to come...
STEP outside the Hive and see the world from a new perspective. Be warned – it can be an unsettling experience, but that’s only to be expected in the Isolation Space.
Beyond the portals of the Isolation Space are found those Souls that seethe against the common flow of consciousness. Mark Cantrell has merged with the flow, listened to the echoes, and returned to tell the tales that crave life in the human mind.
Here, twenty of those stories are bound into one thrilling collection of science fiction, fantasy and horror, with a few literary twists and turns that will fertilise the mind. There is something for everyone in the Isolation Space, if you dare to open the covers, breach the event horizon, and step forth into the worlds that lie within.
Beware, you might emerge from the Isolation Space unscathed – but never untouched.

When The Clock Strikes
Poets with a set-piece that strings together a narrative of work to create a coherent performance might like to try their hand at the Midnight Matinee organised by the Tristan Bates Theatre.
The matinees, described as pioneering, are as much a challenge for the audience as they are the performer; they endure by their name and it’s more than just a dull performance that risks putting the audience to sleep.
Every third Saturday of the month, at 12am midnight, the Tristan Bates Theatre in London’s Covent Garden throws open its doors for insomniacs, be they performers or patrons. Submissions are now open for acts to perform in a new season of matinees. Upcoming shows are scheduled for Saturdays 21st March, 18th April, 16th May and 20th June.
“The Tristan Bates Theatre is looking for the country’s most innovative and insomniac artists to experiment with its audience into the night,” said a spokesperson. “The Midnight Matinees have previously premièred a play by Che Walker, broadcast a live interactive radio comedy and showcased a surreal attempt to blend schizophrenia with storytelling.
“The Midnight Matinee has now been invited to the Latitude Festival for 2009. We will be giving some of the best acts of our current season a chance to perform for our large late-night audience kept up by caffeine, Carlsberg and a craving for raw and riveting theatre.”
