New Deal For Old Books

Kindling a new interest in 19th Century literature

THE British Library has signed a deal with Amazon to resurrect tens of thousands of out of print books and make them available to a modern audience.

Under the deal, some 65,000 works of 19th Century literature, covering fiction, poetry and philosophy, will become available either for free download as e-books, or in paperback as print-on-demand titles.

Poetry on trial

The case for the defence will be cross-examined by a panel of poets, who will debate the removal of Carol Ann Duffy’s poem ‘Education for Leisure’ from the school curriculum.

Hosted by the Leeds Salon, the debate ‘In Defence of Poetry’ is a joint event by The Poetry Business and The Cadaverine Magazine. It will take place on Wednesday, 10 March 2010 from 6.15pm (for an 8.30pm start) to 8.30pm.
